Hij nam deel aan zijn eerste autorace in 1981 tijdens de “24 Hours of Mexico” en op 15-jarige leeftijd stapte hij definitief over op auto’s in 1982. Van 1982 tot 1984 nam Fernández deel aan het Formula Vee Championship en behaalde de titel in ’83 en ’84. Hij reed ook in de Formule K-serie in 1984 en nam deel aan die serie tot en met 1986. Hij eindigde alle drie de jaren in de top vier in het klassement in de Formule K.
