De zangeres, die tweetalig opgroeide in Lausitz, leerde eerst het vak van industrieel klerk. De muzikaal leider van de Cottbuser Rundfunk ontdekte haar zangtalent op een evenement en produceerde al snel haar eerste Sorbische liedjes.
Dat was eind jaren 60. Ze deed acteer- en zangervaring op door deel te nemen aan een cabaret en in verschillende amateurbands. Daarna perfectioneerde ze haar vaardigheden door te studeren, wat ze afrondde met een examen.
Tegelijkertijd werden de eerste records gemaakt.
