Hij was van 1977 tot 1994 de hoofdtrainer van de Universiteit van Oregon, van 1995 tot 1996 de St. Louis Rams van de National Football League en van 2003 tot 2009
de Universiteit van Kentucky. Brooks ‘ Oregon-team uit 1994 won de Pac-10- titel
en speelde in de Rose Bowl van 1995 . Voor zijn inspanningen dat seizoen
won hij een aantal nationale coachingprijzen. De Universiteit van Oregon
noemde het veld bij Autzen Stadium Rich Brooks Field ter ere van zijn
18 seizoenen als coach voor de Ducks.
