Haar doorbraak in filmrol kwam in 1983, toen ze de hoofdrol speelde als Lana in
Risky Business . Ze staat bekend om haar rol als Debby Huston in de
Neil Simon- film The Slugger’s Wife . De Mornay is ook bekend van haar rollen in Runaway Train (1985), The Trip to Bountiful (1985), Backdraft (1991) en
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992). Het filmdebuut van De Mornay was een
kleine rol in de film One from the Heart uit 1981 van Francis Ford Coppola,
waarin haar toenmalige echte partner Harry Dean Stanton speelde.
