Hij is vooral bekend als de oprichter en voormalig vice-voorzitter van Saleen, Inc. , oorspronkelijk Saleen Autosport genaamd, een OEM- fabrikant van speciale voertuigen, waaronder de Saleen S7 en sterk gemodificeerde Ford Mustangs.
Met interesse in snelle auto’s, aangewakkerd door de aankoop van een Porsche door zijn vader , sloot Steve zich aan bij de Porsche Owners Club en werkte zich een
weg omhoog door de rangen van de clubraces, wat leidde tot een carrière in de professionele racerij. Hij nam deel aan de Formula Atlantic- serie waar hij in 1980 derde eindigde in het eindklassement achter de uiteindelijke kampioen Jacques Villeneuve.
Hij stapte in 1982 over naar de SCCA Trans-Am Series en reed
in een Ford Mustang. Vanaf hier begint een passie voor een van de
beroemdste auto’s van Ford zich te manifesteren.
