Catherine was een fervent lezer van jongs af aan en zocht tevergeefs naar het boek dat ze graag als jonge vrouw had kunnen lezen. De eerste regel van dat boek zou zijn geweest: “Er was eens een jonge vrouw op weg om haar fortuin te zoeken.”
Nadat ze haar mijlpaal van een halve eeuw had gepasseerd zonder het boek
te vinden dat ze zocht, besloot ze dat ze het zelf zou moeten schrijven.
Maar haar eerste regel is een beetje huiveringwekkend:
“Alle vrouwen van mijn familie waren ten oorlog getrokken.”
