Ze kwam op vierjarige leeftijd vanuit Istanbul naar Keulen. De naam Şiir,
in het Engels “gedicht”, is terug te voeren op haar vader Metin Eloğlu (1927–1985), een schilder en dichter die in de jaren zestig en zeventig grote literaire prijzen ontving.
